I had never met him, I only saw him in person twice, but off and on in the past 15 years, he and his chums have gotten me through a lot of life's twists and turns.  I know that it shouldn't, but for some reason this one hurts.   Richard Wright died yesterday.  And the world is a less beautiful in his passing...

SPAM!!!

About a month ago, I was showing a colleague how to set up and Gmail account, and I thought -- what the hell -- I might as well sent *J* up with his own email.  He is 5 - why not?

I had let it sit there -- didn't tell anyone about it yet.  On a whim, I figured I would check it to day.  He had 15 messages.  All Spam!  This email account has NEVER been used, but still he is clearly on several mailing list for pills that guarantee now what puberty will hopefully take care of on its own in 8-10 years.

Mysterious Ways -- aka the return of John

As perhaps a few of you know, I lost a very dear friend a few years back.  I got shut out of his life rather abruptly in the wake of his surrogate daughter's death, his long term girlfriend leaving him and his, er, over indulgence in booze.  After nearly 3 years, I sent him an email and we are trying to rebuild things.  He had to hit bottom, and he had to do so by himself (his words).  He is healthier now than I have ever seen him.

All of this is just background.  The real crux of the story is this: He is a musician.  And a damn good one.  His songs have always been "almost great",  his playing fantastic and his composition was wonderful, if just a little too in his head and trying too hard. He was living a life that I envied; singing and playing and emoting in a way that if far more pure than I will ever achieve.  But, with the booze and the heartache, he gave up on the music, sold most of his gear.  He stopped singing.   He gave up.

Well, now he is back.  (It is important to note that he always made fun of 80's synth pop.)  He is the new lead singer/guitar player for the 80's 1 1/2 hit wonder "When in Rome" (remember "The Promise")  currently touring the country supporting "Flock of Seagulls" and "Devo".

I post this not to pitch it as a Lifetime MOW, but to let those who knew John know that he is alive and well.  And to prove that sometimes the world is even more complicated and complex than we give it credit for being...

Here is a link to his site...

I have received a even more requests to post for the Top 10 list from the Wedding, so I am doing a "sanitzed version" with LJ user names:

Love

It's relatively early for me, not yet 10:30.  [info]jonahmamais asleep, as is (I hope) the boy.  I have just been reading the outpouring of blogger love for [info]crboltz and [info]jimkeller in the 24 hours since their wedding.  I have been sitting here thinking about two other people, one of whom is VERY dear to me, who are also in a way embarking on an adventure of love.  I look at my own life, my family and friends, my own heart.  Journaling is not something I do much, nor is it something I do well (I am more of the heckler type), but I must say this, for all the world to hear.

To all of those out there whom I love and who love me, I am so grateful for you all.  You are what gets me through my bad days and what helps the good days stay good.  Love is a very strange and powerful thing.  It has a mind of its own.  It does indeed find a way (it may not be an easy path, but it does.)  Eventually, it stands up proudly and proclaims itself despite the obstacles and opposition.  And every once in a while, it gets me to wear a kilt.

Dylan

There is something oddly satisfying about singing Bob Dylan songs.  Could be that they have only 4 chords, could be that the have 17 verses that uses very strange words.  I think though that it is because it is virtually impossible to sing worse than the songwriter and therefore, it is going to sound pretty good.  (ducks as a shoe is thrown from across the ocean)

Low expectations -- a good starting point for any afternoon with a guitar.

An open letter to the universe

To whom it may concern,

I would like to make a return to your store.  2007 seemed like such a good idea when I saw it on the shelf and bought it.  It even seemed to fit well when I first tried it on.  I took it out and showed my friends, they seemed to like it.  But it is already starting to show a good deal of wear and tear.  There seem to be some preexisting flaws in the fabric which are causing a lot of pain and aggravation.

Could I please return this year and try a different one?  Perhaps a different model number would be good.

Best,
Andy

Casting Karma

Ok, so now that I have sat thru 25 sexy women getting naked, I got the next script of the show...I have the roles of "Fat Woman #1, Fat Woman #2 and Fat woman #3" -- 3 heavy set, unattractive women, who work for a phone sex service.  We see a montage of them, bored (knitting, filing nails, etc.) while, er, performing their jobs...

ugh

Auditions

Today's auditions for CSI:

WOMAN
late 20s to early 30s, sexy with a hot body. Seen in her bra and panties, she is having an affair with a married man when his wife walks in on them. CO-STAR

Oddly, it is not as fun as you would think.   Woman after woman come in to the room, strip down to their bras and panties, do a turn, get dressed and then leave.  25 girls, my assistant, and me.  I think I was the most uncomfortable.  Maybe I am not cut out for casting after all.

wasted opportuinites

I was up ungodly late last night (like usual) trying to slug my way thru the voter info guide for today's elections. After I finally got through the various propositions, I turned to the candidate statements in an effort to make an informed decision there as well. Set aside for the moment how annoying it is that the Major party candidates only rarely issued statements; but at least they are known commodities (to some extent at least). What truly frustrated me were the statements by many of the 3rd party candidates. Here is an opportunity to get a different view to be seen; to show that there is not just a choice of A or B, but many other points of view which can be argued. Instead, we get "FULLY INFORM VOTERS" as the entire reason we should vote for Gail K. Lightfoot of the Libertarian Party for Sec. of State. This is a fascinating statement; I am guessing that Gail feels that voters should be fully informed, yet neglects to do just that in this case. Glenn McMillon, Jr. of the American Independent Party wants us to know that he is "Pro-Life. Pro-Family. Pro-Enforcement"; all legitimate values to have but not really giving me an idea of how he would run statewide elections. Elizabeth Cervantes Barron of the Peace and Freedom Party espouses that she will "raise taxes on the rich; lower taxes on workers." if she is elected Controller. I am certainly happy for her, but this is NOT THE JOB of the controller; it is essentially to implement and enforce the existing tax laws of the state. And this just keeps going.

I am all for 3rd parties. I really am. One of the great things about [info]jimkeller is that he has very well thought out positions; his comments on issues are on point and clear; and he fully takes advantage of every opportunity to speak. Even though we (often) disagree on the issue, I know his position and respect that it is thought out and well reasoned.  I feel that these candidates don't take the voters seriously; don't present themselves as legitimate alternatives to the major party candidates and simply are running to protest rather than win. So why should I cast my vote for them?

As a side note, I am probably voting for a third party candidate for Treasurer, based mostly on her Candidate Statement.  Some voters do read...

Hineni

Transliteration of the Hebrew, meaning "Here I am". Made famous by Abraham as he is about to kill his son (where was Children's Services back then?) and immortalized in "Zorro of the Gay Blade". This seemed to be the best way to say hello to all of you.

As a side note, it is my profound belief that this is, in fact, the culminations of [info]jimkeller's Grand Scheme; a decade long effort to get me onto LJ. It is possible, however, that this view is somewhat flawed. Ah well, here I am...
